I had no idea how much fun I would have!. Alexander Groth, Denver, CO.

I went fly fishing for juvenile tarpon with tarpon town for a week in late April.  It was my first real try at tarpon, and while I had heard that Campeche was the place to go for juvenile tarpon, I had no idea how much fdun I would have!

These little fish fight like monsters, and are usually eager to take the fly.  I've spent most my life fishing for trout, though in the last ten years I've put in many hours going after bonefish, permit, and recently, redfish.  The baby tarpon are by far the greatest fighters of the bunch, and despite watching countless videos of fly fishing for tarpon on TV, no one could have prepared me for the majesty of these leaping fish.

Raul was the consummate host, and Juan, my guide, was one of the best I've had anywhere in the Caribbean.  We fished the calm flats in the morning, casting to the fins that seemed to sprout up everywhere, then moved to the mangroves when the wind picked up.  Fishing along the mangroves involves blind casting right along the edge of the mangrove while keeping one eye focused on the shallow water in front of the boat for cruising fish.

Thanks to Raul and Juan!  I'll be back as soon as I can manage it!
